Furniture store worker is accused of stealing
BUTLER TWP — A one-time trusted employee is accused of stealing more than $7,000 in currency and merchandise from a furniture store in the township.
Butler Township police suspect Haydar Altun, 42, of North Versailles, Allegheny County, took the property between Oct. 13, 2013, and March 30 when he worked as manager of Room 2 Room Furniture at Moraine Pointe Plaza.
District Judge Kevin O’Donnell on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for Altun on felony charges of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
The store owner, Nissim Assouline, contacted police April 7 after he reviewed his business receipts and inventory and discovered the alleged theft, according to court documents.
The internal investigation, Assouline told police, was prompted when he was unable to call the defendant, who had failed to show up for work.
In all, police said, Altun pocketed $6,359 in business receipts that he failed to deposit. He also took $1,000 in merchandise that he failed to pay for, documents said.
Assouline, meanwhile, admitted that his trust in Altun allowed the defendant to get away with the suspected crime for so long.
The alleged victim noted that Altun had previously worked for him at other businesses he owns and even watched his children when they were younger.
Police said they obtained the warrant for Altun’s arrest after he failed to return recent telephone calls from investigators.
