Summit man gets 15 to 30 years
A Summit Township man who raped his own daughter for years, fathering four children, quietly went to prison Wednesday.
The 57-year-old man, who is not being identified to protect the victim’s identity, had pleaded guilty to 71 crimes, including multiple counts of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory rape, indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault and incest.
Butler County Judge Timothy McCune sentenced the man to the terms of a plea arrangement the defendant made earlier with prosecutors: 15 to 30 years in prison.
The man gave no statements in court, and no victims attended.
According to court records, the man began assaulting his daughter in 1992 when she was 12 years old. Court records allege he used violence, threats and alcohol to force the victim to submit.
During the years of sexual abuse, the accuser delivered children in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2000, all in Allegheny County. The eldest child died last year of natural causes.
Court records indicate the man also took numerous photographs of the accuser during the assaults.
Investigators have not said why the woman disclosed the allegations Aug. 26 to Butler County Children and Youth Services.
Among the alleged evidence is positive paternity tests of the man to the accuser’s four children, according to court documents.
In addition to issuing the sentence, the judge declared the man a sexually violent predator under the state’s law. With this designation, the man will be mandated to register his whereabouts for the rest of his life.
In making this determination, the judge accepted a report from a member of the state’s Sexual Offender Assessment Board, who evaluated the man and recommended the SVP classification. The defendant had an opportunity to challenge the findings, which identified him as having an anti-social personality disorder. But he accepted the results.
“I just want to get this over with,” he told the judge.
Later, the man’s attorney, public defender Joseph Smith, said, “It’s in everybody’s best interest that we resolve this case in a quick manner.”
Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope declined to comment.
