Glade Run gets $2 million in state funds

Drained 52-acre lake to be restored

MIDDLESEX TWP — Glade Run Lake’s triumphant return is in the works.

Three state senators announced this morning that the effort to restore the 52-acre lake will receive $2 million in state funds.

Gov. Tom Corbett, along with state Sens. Randy Vulakovich, R-40th, Don White, R-41st and Scott Hutchison, R-21st, planned to visit the lake this morning to announce the commitment of the funds.

“I am pleased and grateful that the governor has committed this vital state funding for the rehabilitation project,” Vulakovich said in a news release.

“This is truly a cooperative effort that has brought together local, county and state agencies and officials, all working to restore this lake.”

The lake was drained in 2011 after faulty dam work was discovered that could threaten structures downstream if it were to fail.

Siggy Pehel of Middlesex Township immediately gathered a group of individuals who became the Glade Run Lake Conservancy, which has raised funds since that time to pay the $4 million to repair the dam.

The conservancy’s board drummed up support from the state Fish and Boat Commission, a number of municipalities, the county commissioners, and 2,000 citizens who have joined the conservancy’s efforts to have the lake restored.

The three senators advocated for the project. In a joint Jan. 24 letter to the governor, they noted the efforts of the private-public coalition for the project and urged the governor to release funds for the work.

“There is a commitment by not only the community, but state agencies and the legislators of Allegheny and Butler counties as well,” they wrote.

Pehel said this morning that the remainder of the funds to repair the dam will come from a $2 million commitment from the state Fish and Boat Commission, plus funding from the conservancy, Middlesex Township, and the Butler County commissioners.

The conservancy had raised $170,000 as of January for the project.
