Bids are sought for ladder truck

Cranberry has list of needs

CRANBERRY TWP — The township’s volunteer fire company might get a new ladder truck after the township supervisors Tuesday night sent out a request for bids for a new vehicle.

Chief Brian Kovac briefed the supervisors on the fire company’s plan for the next 15 years and presented a list of vehicles and equipment based on the expected needs that will come with the township’s projected growth.

The first item on that list is a new ladder truck which would be the first new truck for the company since 2008 and the second ladder truck in its fleet.

Township officials estimated it could cost about $1 million, but that number could fluctuate depending upon the bids.

It would have a six-person cab, a 75-foot ladder and a tank that holds 500 gallons of water. Safety features would include airbags and three rear view cameras, both firsts for any vehicle in the township’s fleet.

Kovac said the new truck is necessary to keep up with the ever-growing demands of serving an increasing population and infrastructure.

“Cranberry Township is growing very fast and we’re trying to keep up while keeping people safe,” he said.

If the supervisors buy the vehicle, it’s expected to take at least a year for it to arrive, Kovac said.

In addition to bidding out for the ladder truck, the supervisors approved buying three new vehicles for the police department.

The police will get a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe for just under $34,000, a 2014 Dodge Charger unmarked police vehicle for $27,000 and a 2014 Dodge Charger marked police vehicle for $29,000.

Each of the vehicles will come from a dealership in Westmoreland County.
