Bill requires receipts for lawmaker expenses
HARRISBURG — State Sen. Randy Vulakovich, R-40th, has introduced legislation that would require state elected officials to provide receipts to receive reimbursements.
As of now, state legislators are able to submit what are called “unvouchered per diems,” meaning they can claim up to $159 daily in reimbursements without receipts from expenses done while performing legislative duties outside of their districts.
Vulakovich, whose district includes southern Butler County, said his legislation is simple. Elected officials, just like other state employees, should have to submit receipts to get reimbursement.
“People don’t like it and certain members are abusing it,” Vulakovich said about the current system. “It taints the whole system and gets a bad light shed on every user.”
Vulakovich said it’s time for increased accountability in the system, which he said his bill would provide.
