SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock School Board on Monday approved its calendar for the 2014-15 school year.

The first day of school for students will be Aug. 26 and the last day will be June 4. Graduation will be June 5.

Superintendent Kathy Nogay presented two potential calendars to the board. The second option had students beginning Sept. 2 and graduating June 12.

The board split the vote 5-4, with Greg Angerett, Mark Taylor, Diana Wolak, Karen McDowell and Heather Scott going for the earlier start and Melissa Allen, Matt Pyle, Michael Scheer and Polly Shaw going for the later start.

Angerett said that all of the e-mails he has gotten have been in favor of the first day of school being in August.

Wolak said she received a note from a teacher stating that students and staff are ready for school by the end of August and are ready to leave by June 5.

Pyle said he liked the September start date because he said it would give more options for snow makeup dates.

The board also solidified its snow makeup dates for the rest of the current school year.

Seven school days were canceled this year, but the calendar only had four snow makeup days.

Nogay said that Friday already has been changed from an Act 80 day to a school day for students.

The board on Monday approved changing May 9 and June 13 from teacher in-service days to days for students. Nogay said those two days will be half days for students.

Taylor asked if it was necessary to drag the school year out so late into June, but Nogay said there was no other choice.

“You don’t have any other options,” Nogay said.

Taylor asked about using Saturdays as makeup days. Nogay said the Legislature has not approved using Saturdays yet.
