BC3 hits recruiting jackpot

BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Community College volleyball program is always pretty good.

Every now and then, it’s pretty great.

One of those up cycles may be coming around again as longtime coach Rob Snyder has announced the additions of Freeport outside hitter Alexis Schrecengost and West Shamokin outside/middle hitter Amanda Wensel to the program.

“These are elite high school players,” Snyder said. “It’s not often we get recruits of that caliber and I’m pretty excited about it.

“You always hope you can get a standout player or two like that so you can build around them. When we had Megan Smith (Butler), Sarah Beals (Seneca Valley ... Those are the years we went to nationals.”

Schrecengost was Freeport’s team MVP as a senior, leading the Yellowjackets to the WPIAL Class AA title. She was also a first team All-WPIAL and all-state selection.

Schrecengost made first team All-WPIAL and all-state as a junior as well. She played for two WPIAL championship teams and one runner up squad at Freeport.

Wensel was a first team all-section player at West Shamokin and made second team All-WPIAL.

“Both girls expressed interest in coming here and we’re thrilled to have them,” Snyder said. “They are the type of players who should make an immediate impact.”

The Pioneers finished 20-7 last fall, losing the WPCC title match in five games to Potomac State.

Opposite hitters Emily Shorr of Butler and Kylie Minnich of Ford City have also committed to the Pioneers. Snyder expects four players to return from last season.

“This is early for us to already have four new recruits,” he said.

The Pioneers are 280-114 overall in Snyder’s 15 years at the helm, including six Region XX titles and two national tournament appearances.

BC3 is 102-35 over the past five seasons.
