Raiders look for impact at PIAA meet
JACKSON TWP — It has already been a memorable season for a quartet of Seneca Valley's swimmers.
They are looking to add to it at the state championship meet, which runs Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
Spencer Tretter, Jacob Fausti, Mike Rhein and Mike Palaski will swim in the Class AAA boys 200 and 400 freestyle relays after breaking the school record in both at the WPIAL meet last month.
“It was a relief to get it (records) at WPIALs,” said Tretter, “but we are hoping to lower the times even more at states.”
SV's 200 freestyle standard is now 1:27.78 while the 400 mark is 3:11.82.
“The guys feel they have unfinished business,” said Raiders' assistant coach Jeff Gavin. “Spirits are high.”
Tretter, a sophomore, will be making his second appearance at PIAAs after competing in the 500 freestyle last year. He will again swim that event, along with the 200 freestyle following a fifth and seventh-place effort, respectively at the WPIAL meet.
“States is a lot more competitive than WPIALs and everybody is more serious about it,” said Tretter. “I've dropped my times throughout the year and am just looking to do well this week.”
“Spencer has grown a lot over the last year,” said Gavin. “He's more mature this year.”
Fausti will also compete individually in the 50 freestyle.
Seneca Valley's girls will be represented by senior Carley Belsterling and freshman Ali Kozlina.
Kozlina earned an appearance in two events after placing fourth in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle at the WPIAL event.
Belsterling's trip to states was four years in the making. She placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke at districts, then waited to see if her time (1:07.05) was one of the top 16 non-automatic qualifying times in the entire state. It was.
“I didn't do as well as I had hoped at WPIALs,” she said. “I wasn't sure if I would get to the state meet or not.
“I'm ending my high school career on a good note and I'm really excited about it,” added Belsterling. “I've worked for four years for this and I'm proud of how far I've come.”
Belsterling's determination has not gone unnoticed.
“She's just very steady,” Gavin said. “She works hard and sets a good example for the other swimmers.”
