JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School Board Monday night honored a middle school student who’s being recognized for outstanding volunteer service.

Elexa White, 13, is a seventh grader at the Seneca Valley Middle School and is one of just eight students statewide to be recognized as a finalist in the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards competition.

The national program honors students in grades 5 to 12 for outstanding volunteer service.

White is being recognized for raising more than $100,000 as a spokesman for the American Heart Association’s Open Your Heart campaign.

She was born with a heart defect that was surgically repaired as a young girl.

She helped plan and raise money for the annual Heart Ball and has publicly shared her story to raise awareness about heart disease.

The school board Monday night honored White with a plaque and praised her for her dedication to volunteerism.
