Uniform colors too crazy

My eyes need a break.

My rods and cones are under attack.

I blame Oregon. I blame business. I blame colleges and pro football organizations who think the more colors mashed together the better.

I’m talking about the trend in football uniforms, from the college ranks to the NFL. They are all hideous.

The latest to offend my sense of sight is the new duds unveiled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

More than a decade ago, the Bucs were smart enough to shed their creamsickle uniforms for their current pewter and red ensemble.

It was a pretty good look. A look that turned the franchise around (because we all know a new uniform changes such fate). A look that won them a Super Bowl.

Now they have gone and messed with it. The results are cringe-worthy.

They make Jacksonville’s mess of a uni look like Jessica Biel in an Oscar gown.

What ever happened to the classic look?

More teams should try to emulate that instead of take a color wheel and throwing it onto a wall.

Think of the best uniforms in the NFL and you think the Steelers, the Packers, the Raiders, the 49ers, the Colts. What do these looks have in common? They are simple and elegant.

Classic.

What we are getting these days are “conceptual” uniforms that in 20 years people are going to look back on and say, “what were they thinking?”

Even the Arena League would be embarrassed by some of these new uniforms.

The roots of this evil go back to big business. The more jerseys they can make teams opt to wear, the more money they make.

They prey on the fans who say, “Oh, I have to get the new (insert team name here) jersey that has every color Crayola has ever made and the numbers have a half-life and can be seen from space.”

Oregon is the biggest offender. To date I think the Ducks have two million different uniform combinations. That may not even be an exaggeration.

I’m waiting for Oregon to wear different uniforms in each quarter of a game in the not-so-distance future, that’s how ridiculous it is getting.

I wouldn’t mind teams tweaking their look every so often. But the crazy designs need to stop.

Then you have the Buffalo Bills, who keep going backward in time. Pretty soon they are going to unveil leather helmets.

It hasn’t been all bad. Miami’s redesign last offseason was done well. Denver opting to wear only orange jerseys at home was also a nice touch.

Teams need to realize people do notice what they put on the backs of their players.

Tampa, no one wants to see these new unis in action.

Nike, quit killing my eyes, one bad uniform at a time.
