Wrestlers looking to extend seasons
FOX CHAPEL — The fight for survival is on.
Wrestlers from Butler, Seneca Valley, Mars and Knoch will look to extend their individual seasons Saturday during the Section 3-AAA Tournament at Fox Chapel High School. Matches begin at 9:30 a.m.
Wrestlers placing among the top five in their respective weight classes in the tournament — which also includes North Hills, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Plum, North Allegheny, Central Catholic, Shaler and Pine-Richland — advance to next week’s WPIAL tourney at Canon McMillan High School.
The lone defending section champion from Butler County is Butler senior 182-pounder Ryan Hannon (29-3), who is the No. 1 seed at that weight class. The Golden Tornado’s only other top-seeded wrestler is junior Jeremiah Bortmas (28-8) at 152.
Butler has a pair of No. 2 seeds in senior Will Bortmas (27-5) at 220, and junior John Bojanac (24-10) at heavyweight.
Other 20-win wrestlers entering the section meet for the Tornado are freshman Scotty Dietrich (29-10) at 120, senior Cody Houston (25-8) at 138 and senior Alex White (23-12) at 195.
Seneca Valley has a pair of No. 2 seeds in sophomore Ben Lynch (25-9) at 113 pounds and junior Austin Leon (20-7) at 152. Sophomore Alex Lynch (30-3) is seeded third at 106.
Raiders senior Nick Zoria, 25-9 at 126, has 99 career wins entering the tournament. Senior Stephen Rudolph sports a 25-11 record at 160.
Mars’ best individual record in the regular season belongs to 182-pound senior Nathan Bair at 16-8. Freshman Silas Bender is 15-11 at 126, senior Alex Grosso 14-9 at 220.
Knoch’s top two won-loss records in the section tourney belong to freshman 132-pounder Max Freyermuth (11-12) and 138-pound sophomore Brandon Yobst (10-12).
The WPIAL Tournament runs for three days and is scheduled to begin Feb. 27.
