Butler wrestlers reach QF round

MURRYSVILLE — Everything Jeremiah Bortmas saw on the internet came to life.

The top-seeded Franklin Regional wrestling team, which is ranked No. 1 in the state, was as good as advertised. Bortmas, a 152-pound wrestler for Butler, enjoyed the opportunity.

The ninth-seeded Golden Tornado fell to the Panthers 64-6 in the WPIAL wrestling quarterfinals Wednesday night at Franklin Regional High School. Franklin Regional also beat No. 16 seed Seneca Valley 74-0 in the first round.

Bortmas, who lost to Josh Shields 18-5, welcomed the learning experience. When the two had met in eighth grade, Shields pinned him.

“That’s what we want to be. We want to be at that level. They’re the best,” Bortmas said. “I watch them all the time on the internet. I’ve wrestled Shields before. It’s a good way to track your progress when you wrestle teams that good.”

Alex White picked up the lone win for Butler (10-5) against the Panthers. In the first round, the Golden Tornado upset eighth-seeded Mt. Lebanon 32-31 thanks to a gutsy effort from Hugh O’Neill. In the week leading up to the match, Butler coach Scott Stoner believed the match could come down to 106 pounds.

“I started working with him a little bit more this week, giving him a couple offenses and mentally trying to toughen him up,” Stoner said. “One thing you want to do in life and sport is put kids in difficult positions and see how they respond to the pressure. … It was his turn tonight to carry the team.”

After the Blue Devils’ Zenul Zaynullayev pinned J.D. Bojanac at 285 pounds to put Mt. Lebanon ahead 31-29, Stoner’s prediction came true.

“When I stepped in there, I was excited because it was coming down to me,” O’Neill said. “When the match was coming to J.D. and Willie (Bortmas), I knew it was coming down to me. It got real.”

O’Neill, who is 4-6 this season, built a 5-2 lead before he was hit for stalling in the third period. With time winding down, O’Neill held onto Jake Buono and held on to win 5-3.

“I just held onto his arm tight,” O’Neill said. “I didn’t want to let go and let the team down.”

The Golden Tornado fell behind Mt. Lebanon 16-0 before winning five straight matches to go ahead 22-16.

Cody Houston (138 pounds), Bortmas (152) and Zach Raible (160) all won by fall to spark the comeback. It was clear to Bortmas that Butler needed bonus points with the wins. That didn’t rattle him.

“I just focused on my match. I had to go out in the hall for a second and think about it,” Bortmas said. “I don’t do a lot of thinking really. I just go out and wrestle and do what I’m good at.”

After Mt. Lebanon tied the match with a win by decision at 195, Butler’s Will Bortmas won by major decision to put the Golden Tornado ahead 29-25.

Franklin Regional didn’t allow any drama in its first match. In 13 of the 14 bouts, the Panthers earned bonus points. Seneca Valley’s Steve Rudolph lost by decision at 170 pounds, 6-1.

“That’s a tough lineup to run into in the round of 16 for the WPIALs. We told every single kid that you have nothing to lose and it’s a good gage to see where you’re at,” Raiders coach Kevin Wildrick said. “There’s no reason to go out there timid and get beat up. Go after each guy and show them you belong on the mat.”

Against Butler, the Panthers won the first nine matches, earning bonus points with each win. Franklin Regional coach Eric Mausser was pleased with the outcome.

“We wanted to come out and get ready and set the tone for the playoffs and get out of here healthy,” Mausser said. “Make sure everyone stays healthy, weren’t getting banged up and put points on the board.”

Hannon dropped a 3-1 decision at 170 and Bojanac lost in overtime at 285, but all the other results were lopsided.

Stoner wanted to see a little more from his team.

“We wanted some personal successes, like scoring a couple of takedowns and staying in good enough position to score against top-level kids,” Stoner said. “After awhile, the kids dropped their heads down and took their beating. I don’t get that. No matter what the score was on the board, I wanted to get a score late in the match.”
