Freeport bows in overtime

Josh Beale did everything he did to keep the Freeport boys basketball team in the game.

Beale scored 21 points, but the Yellowjackets just couldn’t find a way to put Valley away in a 65-62 Section 1-AAA overtime loss Tuesday night in New Kensington.

Ryan Weigold also scored 14 points for the Yellowjackets (8-7, 2-6).

Soilis had a double-double for the Yellowjackets, also pulling down 20 rebounds.

Hockey

Mars 7, Deer Lakes 5 — The Planets snapped out of their funk. Using two goals from Craig Mazzotta and Jonathan Kowalkowski, Mars (11-3) was able to stop its two-game losing streak with a win over the Lancers at BladeRunners Warrendale.

The Planets outscored the Deer Lakes 4-2 in the third period to score the win. Paul Maust, Noah Master and Beau Heakins also scored for Mars.

Private Schools

First Baptist 43, Career Connection 37 (girls basketball) — Hannah Roth filled out the stat sheet to lead First Baptist to a win. Roth scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists in the win. Alyssa Barnhart also scored 13 points and added eight rebounds and Lydia Roth had 10 points and seven rebounds for First Baptist.

Resistance 88, First Baptist boys 56 — Paul Drake led First Baptist with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the loss. Trevor Barnhart also scored 22 points and had six steals. In the junior varsity game, Resistance beat First Baptist 54-40. Aaron Drake had 25 points and eight rebounds. Cameron Karns pulled down 12 rebounds and Andy Altangerel had 14 boards.

Rifle

Indiana 795 (43x), Butler 792 (50x) — Zach Fisher, Ben Crusan and Chloe Eagal all shot 100s for the Golden Tornado.
