Giant Eagle robbed
CRANBERRY TWP — A robber walked up to a cashier in the busy Cranberry Giant Eagle on Monday afternoon and demanded money from the cash register, police said.
Moments later, he fled, currency in hand, and made off in a waiting car outside the Cranberry Mall store on Route 19.
“A grocery store robbery is unusual for this area,” said township police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino.
No one was hurt, but the crime left the targeted cashier in the store’s hot food section near the deli “very shaken up,” Mascellino said.
Police have no suspects but they could be looking for three men — the robber, the getaway driver and another occupant in the car.
The robber is described as white, in his early-20s and about 180 pounds. He has dark hair and had a mustache and a scruffy or short beard, Mascellino said.
The man wore a black coat and a black Pittsburgh Steelers knit cap with the team’s logo on it.
His suspected accomplices are both believed to be white males. Police had no further descriptions.
The trio left in a silver car, possibly a Pontiac, that was last seen traveling south on Route 19.
Police said they continue to review store surveillance video that captured the robbery.
“They are pretty good images,” Mascellino said.
He said police also are checking with neighboring businesses to see if there is any video of the getaway car.
Investigators believe the robber entered the store about 2:40 p.m.
“It seemed to be pretty busy in there but probably no more busier than usual,” Mascellino said. “It’s a busy store.”
The man was seen “milling about” for a while before he approached the cashier, a young man, and asked “for the bills” in the register, according to investigators.
The cashier turned over an undisclosed amount of currency and the suspect left the store.
Police did not know if the robber implied he had a weapon.
“The cashier was upset and very shaken up afterward,” Mascellino said. “We have to reinterview him, hopefully today.”
Store manager Bob Sandonato did not immediately return a telephone call this morning.
