Paper recycler explains, corrects overflow problem

EVANS CITY — The newspaper recycler blamed for allowing a bin at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church to overflow last week said it has fixed the problem.

Jennifer Breckenridge, director of human resources at Abibow Recycling, said Friday that one of the four trucks used to retrieve newspapers in the Pittsburgh region was involved in an accident which took the truck out of service. That caused a backup in paper retrieval throughout the region, including St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, which is on Van Buren Street in Evans City.

“That put us behind, along with the (frigid) weather issues,” Breckenridge said of the church’s backup. She said the company, which is based in Houston, Texas, has moved a truck and driver to Pittsburgh from its Cincinnati location. The company also brought in a driver from St. Louis.

“We’ve been scrambling in Pittsburgh to get back on track,” Breckenridge said.

She said the four trucks service about 1,000 customers in the greater Pittsburgh area. Each truck can hold about 65,000 pounds of newspaper.

“(Pittsburgh) is a big operation so when one truck goes down it causes a ripple effect,” Breckenridge said.

Most of the Pittsburgh-area customer base is caught up with the addition of the truck and extra workers, Breckenridge said.

“We’re working as hard as possible to get Pittsburgh’s paper picked up and get everyone back on schedule,” she said.

Evans City Police Chief Joe McCombs said on Tuesday that his officers had received many complaints last week of blowing papers from residents in the Van Buren Street area.

He said the St. Peter’s bin was emptied late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning after officers told the company that they would face a daily fine for each day the papers were not retrieved.

The Rev. David Saylor said on Friday that the bin looks good, and he is confident there will be no problem in the future.

“Everything’s been picked up and looks good at this point,” Saylor said. “I think we’re on schedule to get it taken care of in a little better fashion.”

St. Peter’s collects newspapers to be sold by the pound. The cash is donated to Camp Lutherlyn in Franklin Township for scholarships that send inner-city youth to the camp.
