Minto weighing options
CENTER TWP — Coming off a career-revitalizing win over New Zealand great Shane Cameron last month, Brian Minto is unsure of what the future holds.
The Butler heavyweight boxer does know he turns 39 Jan. 27.
“I don’t have that big a window left anymore, so I’m going to maximize my opportunities,” Minto said.
Those opportunitites may include a two-fight guarantee he has with Duco Events, a stipulation that kicked in once he defeated Cameron.
That promoter plans to bring Minto (39-7, 25 KOs) back to New Zealand in March to fight an opponent to be determined, then pit Minto against 22-year-old unbeaten Joseph Parker (7-0) in June or July.
“It’s nice to know that option’s out there, but I haven’t signed anything there, so my options are still open,” Minto said. “At this stage of my career, I’m going to take whatever the best deal is for me.
“That (Parker) kid is good. I’ve trained with him over there and he’s very popular. They’re trying to bring him along pretty fast.”
Kevin Barry, who trained Minto in New Zealand and was in his corner for the Cameron fight, would train him again for his next fight over there. But Barry also trains Parker.
For a Minto-Parker bout, Barry would be in Parker’s corner.
“He’s committed to him and I understand that,” Minto said. “From my perspective, if I lose to a kid who’s 8-0, that would be pretty damaging. I have to look at that.
“Boxing’s been good to me and I respect the sport. It’s crazy how things happen. I was unsure of myself, flying to another country, hooking up with a trainer I’d never met ... Sometimes you have to take chances in life to be successful.”
By winning the previously vacant WBO Oriental heavyweight title, Minto will be ranked among the WBO’s top 15 when the next rankings are released soon.
“I’m a smaller heavyweight and there’s a lot of name guys out there looking to stay busy,” Minto said. “I imagine my phone will be ringing.”
Minto said he is taking his career “fight by fight” now and plans to continue as long as he keeps winning and stays healthy.
“I feel great. I’ve always stayed in shape,” he said. “I won’t give myself an excuse to get out. I’ll know when it’s time.”
Minto fought four times in 2013, seven times in the past two years.
“I know I’m better when I stay active,” he said. “That much I’ve learned.”
