Jennie Hughes, 89, of Butler passed away Tuesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 15, 1924, in New Brighton, Pa., the daughter of the late Joseph and Olimpiada “Lena” (Balith) Wdovin.

Jennie was a member of the Thorncreek United Methodist Church. She retired as a registered nurse and had worked for Allegheny General Hospital, Western Psych, Saxony Health Care and Children's Rehab Unit in Butler, as a private duty nurse and as a member of the BCMH Nursing Alumni Association. Most recently, she was a companion and visited the sick from her church. She was always willing to help others. She was a graduate of the Buford one-room school house. Jennie enjoyed gardening, being outdoors and taking rides. She had worked at the “Pickle Farm.”

Surviving are her three daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Tompkins, Betty Diane Hughes and Darlene Lavery, all of Butler; her two sons, Robert J. (Bonnie) Hughes of Coatesville, Pa., and Gary L. Hughes of Conway, Ark.; her 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Marie Raub of New Castle; and her two brothers, Nick Wdovin of Butler and Paul Dovin of Honeybrook.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hughes, who died on April 2, 1998; her son, David J. Hughes; and a grandson, Clifford Werling.

HUGHES — The friends of Jennie Hughes, who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, will be received at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. Saturday, with her pastor, the Rev. Kurt Knobel officiating.
