SR approves budget with no tax hike
SLIPPERY ROCK — Property taxes in the borough will stay the same in 2014.
Borough council on Tuesday voted 5-0, with councilmen Ron Steele and Itzi Meztli absent, to approve the $1.1 million budget.
The budget has a property tax rate of 21.875 mills, with 18.71 mills for general purposes, 2 mills for street lighting and 1.165 mills for fire protection.
A mill generates $1 tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.
The budget includes two new part-time workers, one for the streets department and one to do accounting; two new part-time police officers; and money to improve the borough’s website.
To pay for the new items, council chose to pay for a new police cruiser using savings rather than taking out a loan and chose to keep the solid waste service fee at $3 a month rather than cut it to $1.50.
This year’s budget is $1.2 million with the same tax rate.
