Posting on social media leads to retaliation charges

EVANS CITY — A Beaver County man faces a hearing next month on charges he posted a lewd comment about an Evans City police officer on an anonymous social media site.

Jacob M. Patterson, 22, of Freedom was apparently harboring a grudge against Sgt. Don Myers when he made the posting on Oct. 30, said state police, who filed the charges.

Myers in September cited Patterson for several inspection and equipment violations, including driving a vehicle with an improper horn, following an Aug. 4 traffic stop in the borough.

District Judge Wayne Seibel at a summary trial found Patterson guilty on three of the four citations, according to court documents. He was ordered to pay a combined $288 in fines and court costs, records showed.

After the trial and later that day, Patterson posted a derogatory comment about Myers on the social site Instagram.

The officer “felt threatened by the post,” a police affidavit said.

Patterson is charged with retaliation against a prosecutor or judicial official, retaliation for past action and harassment, all misdemeanors.

A preliminary hearing for Patterson, who could not be reached for comment, is set for Jan. 14 at Seibel’s office in Evans City.
