Man allegedly steals $6,549 worth of jewelry
An Armstrong County man is accused of stealing more than $6,000 in jewelry, including a wedding ring, from a Butler home that he was recently remodeling.
Butler police on Friday charged Paul D. Holbein, 27, of Rural Valley with felony counts of theft and receiving stolen property.
Investigators suspect Holbein took the items between Oct. 25 and Nov. 4 while he was renovating Denise Slagle’s home in the 500 block of West Penn Street.
Slagle notified authorities Nov. 4 after she discovered her wedding ring missing, according to court documents.
It did not take long for police to identify Holbein as a suspect.
Police said they checked the Butler County Precious Metals website and learned he sold a wedding ring, four gold necklaces and two gold charms on Nov. 4 at Skip’s Gold Exchange in Butler Township.
Slagle later identified from photographs all the items. She valued the jewelry at $6,549. Holbein sold those same items for $830, documents said.
But before police could recover the property, they were told by the store owner it had already been melted, documents said.
Holbein is in the Indiana County Jail on a probation violation. He was placed there Dec. 5, a jail officer said.
Butler police have a hold detainer on him in connection with their theft case.
Butler County authorities have their own detainer for Holbein who is wanted on a probation violation in connection with an unrelated criminal case.
Holbein in that case was arrested on charges he sold heroin and syringes to Butler County Prison inmates who were part of a community service detail in May 2012 at the Butler Farm Show in Connoquenessing Township.
Holbein later pleaded no contest to felony drug possession. He was sentenced to 9 to 18 months in county jail followed by 5 years on probation.
Prison records showed he served the minimum jail sentence and was released March 8.
