Bus, car crash head-on

Students, car driver taken to hospital

HICKORY TWP, Lawrence County — Four students were injured Tuesday morning after snow covered roads caused a car to collide head-on with a school bus.

State police in New Castle said a car driven by Shannon C. Mcanney, 21, of Gibsonia crashed into a Portersville Christian School bus about 7:50 a.m. after she lost control of her car while driving east on Route 108, just past Independence Lane.

Mcanney struck the rear of a car driven by Jacob R. Oxendale, 18, of Slippery Rock before her car crossed the center line into the other lane, colliding with the school bus carrying 13 students.

Mcanney and four of the students were taken to Jameson Hospital in New Castle for minor to moderate injuries.

Lee Saunders Jr., the head administrator with the school, said the students injured ranged from 7 to 17 years old.

“There was nothing severe,” he said of their injuries. “There were a couple bumps and bruises.”

Saunders said three of the four students were released from the hospital by noon while another was held for precautionary measures for a possible concussion.

Saunders said the bus was going about 15 mph because of the weather when it was hit. The students on the bus were delayed from school for about an hour while a replacement bus came to pick them up.

The Portersville Christian School enrolls 233 students and runs seven buses.

The driver of the bus, Bruce J. Gardner, 63, of Ellwood City, was not injured, nor were Oxendale and the 16-year-old passenger in his car.

Mcanney is charged with driving at an unsafe speed.

Both Mcanney’s car and the school bus were towed from the scene.
