Zelie business gets exception

Dumpster OK'd for renovations

ZELIENOPLE — The borough council Monday night decided to give a new business a break by allowing the owners to place a Dumpster on Main Street during January so they can complete renovations on their building.

Borough council voted to allow the owners of a new bridal/dress shop, which is moving into the soon-to-be-vacated Roach & Ziegler store, to place a Dumpster in parking spaces in front of the building.

Roach & Ziegler, a home interior and design business, is moving to a new building on South Main Street that it will lease. It will share the building with the Spring Street Café.

Its former building has been sold to the new shop owners.

Police Chief Jim Miller initially was concerned about the Dumpster placement because Main Street is a state-owned highway and because borough ordinance prohibits the parking of vehicles on Main Street from 3 to 5 a.m.

Miller had suggested that an area along Spring Street be used for the Dumpster. But he said the new building owners didn’t want to do that because of the potential for construction debris such as nails being accidentally dropped on Main Street.

“It’s a potential new retail business in town. I think we should do what we can,” said Councilwoman Mary Hess before the vote.

Borough council agreed and voted to allow the Dumpster. The council will require that reflectors and flashing lights be installed for safety.

In other action, council voted to reappoint Tom Surgalski to a five-year term on the borough’s Airport Authority, and to reappoint Sally Whitcomb and Doug Hilf Jr. to four-year-terms on the borough’s planning commission.

It also set the council’s reorganization meeting for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6 in the borough’s council chambers. At that time, new council members Gregg Semel and Donald Burgess are expected to attend their first meeting.
