Seven Fields raises tax for businesses
SEVEN FIELDS — The borough council Monday night approved a final borough budget for next year that doesn’t include a property tax increase but does include another fee.
Council by a vote of 4-1 increased the business privilege tax, a move that is expected to bring in about $44,000 next year.
The tax increased from $500 annually to $1,000 for businesses that have more than $100,000 in gross receipts per year. It will affect most of the nearly 100 businesses in the borough
Any business with less than $100,000 in gross receipts is exempt from the tax hike.
Council amended the threshold to qualify for the tax after a resident last month voiced his concerns about the proposal. The original resolution called for a tax increase for any business that records more than $50,000 in gross receipts per year.
Kevin Caridad was the only member of council to vote against the tax.
For the overall budget, Manager Tom Smith said the property tax rate in Seven Fields will remain at 7 mills.
The budget plans for more than $1.2 million in spending next year, which is about $44,000 less than this year.
One of the biggest expenditures is the $130,000 for costs associated with the creation of a Seven Fields/Evans City regional police department, which is expected to be running in 2015.
