PITTSBURGH — The Point Park University women's basketball team, coached by Butler graduate Tony Grenek, is ranked 24th on the NAIA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll.

The Pioneers (8-0), off to the best start in school history, are one of five NAIA Division II unbeatens in the country.

Butler graduate Katresa Savisky and Karns City graduate Ashley Campbell are seniors on the squad.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Five Slippery Rock University women's soccer players have earned all-region honors.Making first team are goalkeeper Dana O'Neill, defender Lauren Impey and midfielder Allison Harbart. Forward Andrea Felix made second team, midfielder Leslie Henny third team.SRU finished 15-4-2 this season and won the Atlantic Region title.

ERIE — The Butler County Community College basketball teams dropped decisions at Mercyhurst NE Wednesday night.Cody West scored 30 points, sank seven treys and dished out seven assists in the men's 114-61 loss. Hunter French added 12 points for BC3 (1-8).Shelby Johnston scored 31 points and snared 11 rebounds in the women's 93-65 loss. Jen Barry added 18 points, Ashley Brehm 12 points and four assists for the Pioneers (1-7).

MEXICO CITY — The game between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves was postponed because of smoky conditions inside the Mexico City arena.The arena was evacuated about 45 minutes before the scheduled 9:30 p.m. EST tipoff when a generator malfunction outside the arena sent smoke pouring into the building, according to NBA spokeswoman Sharon Lima.

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms with free agent reliever Joe Nathan on a two-year contract with a club option for 2016, accomplishing one of their main objectives this offseason by adding one of baseball's most accomplished closers to the bullpen.

BOSTON — The World Series champion Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year contract.The lefty-hitting Pierzynski replaces Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the Boston lineup. The Red Sox are hoping Pierzynski and David Ross can do the job until prospects Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart are ready.
