3 killed in pair of accidents

Separate crashes occur Sunday

Slushy road conditions Sunday afternoon were a possible factor in a two-vehicle collision that killed an East Brady man and a Rimersburg woman in central Clarion County, state police said.

Richard Olcus, 58, and his front-seat passenger, Dianne Hawk, 59, died in the crash on Route 68 in Monroe Township. Hawk’s 11-year-old daughter also was badly injured in the wreck.

Police said Olcus was driving west on Route 68 about 2:10 p.m. when he lost control of his 2006 GMC Canyon just west of Five Points Road.

The pickup crossed into the eastbound lane and slid sideways into the path of a tractor-trailer.

The rig driver, Frederick Koerber, 67, no address given, veered toward the south side of the road but was unable to avoid the collision, police said.

The tractor-trailer struck the pickup’s passenger side. Both vehicles traveled off the road and ended in a field.

A police report noted that the road was “slushed covered” but investigators have not yet ruled if that factored in the crash.

Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer pronounced Olcus and Hawk dead at the scene at 3:55 p.m. Both died of severe injuries to the head, body, arms and legs.

“It was a pretty devastating accident,” Shaffer said.

Police said Olcus and Hawk were both wearing seat belts and their air bags deployed.

The girl, who was riding in the back seat and wearing a seat belt, was flown by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Her condition was not known this morning but Shaffer said he expected her to recover from her injuries.

Koerber, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

Sligo and Clarion volunteer firefighters assisted police at the scene.

Later that evening, meanwhile, state police in Mercer said the driver of a sport-utility vehicle was killed after rear-ending a PennDOT snow plow truck on Interstate 79 in southeastern Mercer County.

Authorities have yet to release the name of the driver whose Chevrolet Tahoe drove into the southbound plow about 7:05 p.m. Sunday in Findley Township.

Troopers said the SUV caught fire and spun around after rear-ending the plow. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jason McGhee, no age given, of Mercer, who was driving the plow, was not injured.
