SRU earns chance at title

ERIE — Slippery Rock University is heading back to the PSAC men’s soccer championship game with a chance for revenge.

The Rock edged Millersville 4-3 in a shootout on Friday after the teams went scoreless during regulation and overtime in the PSAC semifinals at Mercyhurst.

SRU, ranked No. 24 in the nation, will battle Mercyhurst — a 3-0 winner over West Chester — for the conference crown.

The Lakers defeated Slippery Rock 1-0 in last season’s title match.

The Rock (12-3-3) earned the return trip after Ryan Lutke netted the clinching penalty kick past a diving Brad Benzing to give SRU the 4-3 victory.

Joshua Gray, Stephen Donnelly and Dom Francis also converted on their shootout opportunities.

Benzing and SRU goalkeeper Joe Agerskow each made one save during in the PK session. The difference came when Millersville’s Austin Hoke struck a shot that hit the post and bounced out.

In an evenly-matched affair, both teams finished with 17 total shots, five shots on goal, five corner kicks and five saves.

Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst will play for the title on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Rock is seeking its seventh PSAC title and first since 2009.
