SV school board has 1 seat to fill after 2 resignations

Voters will elect 1 new member

JACKSON TWP — Two members of the Seneca Valley School Board resigned Monday night, but for different reasons.

Eric Gordon resigned because he moved out of his district. Gordon still lives in Cranberry Township, but moved into an area represented by Jeanette Lahm.

The board also lost Kelly Kopera, who represented Seven Fields and Evans City. She offered a tearful resignation at the board meeting Monday, saying health concerns prevent her from continuing on the board,

Board members and those in attendance gave her a standing ovation after Kopera said she could no longer continue in service.

She also offered the board an apology for her resignation, an apology that prompted board President Bob Hill to say that Kopera gave “nothing short of a hero’s effort” for staying on the board for as long as she did.

The board now has 30 days to fill Kopera’s seat, which still has two years remaining.

Hill said the board for the next two weeks will accept letters of interest from prospective candidates, adding that candidates must live in Evans City or Seven Fields.

The board will publicly interview each candidate at its Nov. 18 meeting before voting on a replacement, either on that date or at a special meeting.

The replacement for Gordon is decided today.

Gordon chose not to run for re-election this year because of his move, and Cranberry Township resident Tim Hester won the primary in May for that seat.

Running unopposed in today’s election, Hester will assume Gordon’s seat at the board’s reorganization meeting in December.

Gordon was elected to the board in 2009.
