Lauding best of the best
The fall sports season is rapidly coming to a close.
With its (near) end comes my fall sports awards. Call them the Golden Mikeys.
Well, maybe not. This is the one time I wish my name was Oscar.
Anyway, here is my choice for the best of the best this fall:
Football Player of the Year
And the nominees are: T.J. Holl, Seneca Valley; Josh Schultheis, Mars; Tyler Kepple, Karns City; Foster Reznor, Grove City.
And the winner is: Holl.
What? Not Schultheis, the man-beast that rumbles through the opponents for the Planets like he’s rumbling through a banner held up by the cheerleaders before games?
Yes. Holl is my choice. And there’s a simple reason: The Seneca Valley offense is almost completely reliant upon the junior.
He’s thrown for 1,813 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 803 yards and 14 scores.
Football Coach of the Year
And the nominees are: Don Holl, Seneca Valley; Steve Sherer, Summit Academy; Brendan Hathaway, Slippery Rock; Scott Heinauer, Mars.
And the winner is: Sherer.
All the Summit Academy coach did was get a Knights team that has a brand new roster every season to the playoffs for the first time in school history.
Enough said.
Boys Soccer Player of the Year
And the nominees are: Jared Myers, Seneca Valley; Colton Smith, Seneca Valley; Luc LaChance, Slippery Rock; Spenser Myers, Karns City
And the winner is: Smith.
The Raiders’ goalkeeper had an excellent defense in front of him, but when he had to make a big save, he did.
His 10 shutouts this season are a school record.
Girls Soccer Player of the Year
And the nominees are: Emily LoPresti, Karns City; Breann Wood, Karns City; Jess Neill, Seneca Valley; Amber Fichter, Mars; Erica Jack, Freeport
And the winner is: Fichter
With a full third of the Planets’ starting lineup out for the season with knee injuries, Fichter still managed to score 34 goals and add 13 assists.
Girls Volleyball Player of the Year
And the nominees are: Zoe Pawlak, Freeport; Alexis Schrecengost, Freeport; Celina Sanks, Knoch; Carly Shearer, Slippery Rock; Makayli Terwilliger, A-C Valley.
And the winner is: Sanks
This was a tough category as all were dominant this season. In fact, I could have nominated five more players for this award, but didn’t have the room.
Sanks is the clear choice. She may be the most dominant volleyball player Butler County has seen in a decade.
Mike Kilroy is a staff writer for the Butler Eagle.
