Franklin man killed in crash
SANDY LAKE TWP, Mercer County — State police suspect a Mercer County woman Saturday afternoon ran a stop sign and collided with another car, killing the other driver, a Venango County man, and injuring two children.
Ryan P. Voorhees, 37, of Franklin died at the scene of the crash at Booher and Route 62 about 3:45 p.m., authorities said.
The other driver, 27-year-old Elsie E. Welton of Fredonia, and two 5-year-old boys riding in her car all suffered minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment.
According to a police report, Welton was driving a 2007 Pontiac G6 east on Booher Road and “failed to notice the stop sign and drove into the intersection.”
The front of her car slammed into the left side of Voorhees’ 2001 Toyota Corolla that was traveling north on Route 62.
The collision sent both cars spinning off the road. The Toyota landed on its driver’s side and the back of the Pontiac ended up against an embankment.
Police said Voorhees was not wearing a seat belt. Welton had her seat belt on and both her passengers were in child safety seats.
The Sandy Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Life Force Ambulance assisted police at the scene.
Police said the crash investigation is continuing and charges against Welton are pending.
A Grove City native, Voorhees worked for more than 15 years at McKean’s Shurfine grocery store in Sandy Lake. He is survived by his wife and a young daughter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Scott A. Black Funeral Home in Stoneboro.
