SRU falls to Pitt in preseason

PITTSBURGH — Maurice Lewis-Briggs scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Tabari Perry recorded a double-double, but the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team was defeated 96-60 by the University of Pittsburgh on Friday night in an exhibition game.

Pitt had four players score in double figures, led by Durand Johnson’s game-high 21 points. Cameron Wright added 17 points, Talib Zanna chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds, while Lamar Patterson collected 11 points and five assists.

It marked the second preseason game against a Division I foe in four days for The Rock. SRU dropped a 77-65 decision at Southern Mississippi on Tuesday.

Perry tallied 10 points and hauled in 10 rebounds on Friday for Slippery Rock, which trailed 39-20 at halftime.

The Rock will open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Charleston at the Clarion Hotel Conference Classic hosted by Shepherd University. SRU’s first home game will take place Nov. 14 against Ohio Valley University at 7 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball

Slippery Rock University salvaged a set, but fell by a 3-1 margin at Gannon on Friday night in PSAC-West action.

SRU (9-20, 4-12) was downed by scores of 25-15, 17-25, 25-20 and 25-12.

Kristy Lake led The Rock with 10 kills, while Caroline Houston added eight kills and 15 digs. Michelle Hren chipped in six kills and eight blocks.

Janna Reilly tallied 23 assists and 10 digs and Kayla Woo had 13 digs.
