Man, 33, to serve 5 to 10 years for role in robberies
A Clearfield Township man will serve 5 to 10 years in state prison for his role in a series of business robberies and burglaries.
Shaun A. Adams, 33, “hopes to be able to close out this chapter of his life, serve his sentence and become a productive member of society,” said defense attorney Joseph Smith.
During previous court hearings, Adams testified that during multiple convenience store robberies, he was the getaway driver and 29-year-old Jacob Smith was the gun holder. However, he said the weapon used was a pellet gun.
Among the businesses reportedly robbed were the Dollar General on Route 68 in Fairview Township, the 7-Eleven in Pine Township in northern Allegheny County and the 7-Eleven on Route 8 in Penn Township.
The co-defendants as well as Smith’s sister, Melissa Smith, also were charged in part or whole with burglarizing 10 businesses in Butler and Armstrong counties between August 2009 and May 2011. Among the burglaries were pizza shops, convenience stores, restaurants and a bank.
Adams pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of burglary.
Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Adams Tuesday in accordance with a plea arrangement the defendant made with the Butler County District Attorney’s Office. In addition to the prison time, Adams must serve four years of probation.
Already Jacob Smith is serving a 12- to 24-year sentence for his role in the crimes.
And Melissa Smith, who entered pleas on charges related to the burglaries as well as two of the robberies, is serving a 57- to 114-month state prison sentence.
