Burning bed case wraps up

MARION TWP — A township woman who lit her own home on fire during an argument with her boyfriend was sentenced Thursday.

Beatrice Jo Gravatt, 48, pleaded guilty to risking a catastrophe.

Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced her in keeping with a plea arrangement the defendant made with the Butler County District Attorney’s Office: 3 to 6 months in prison. However, as part of the arrangement, Gravatt was immediately paroled on credit for eight days she already spent in prison. She also must serve two years on probation and get a mental health evaluation.

According to court records, at about 2:45 a.m. on May 21, Gravatt set fire to a mattress in a bedroom, and to a clothes basket and the kitchen floor while her boyfriend was sleeping at the kitchen table.

The boyfriend, owner of the mobile home the pair was living in on County Line Road, put out the fire before firefighters arrived and no one was hurt.

The defendant chose not to speak in court when given the opportunity.
