SV hosts Foxes in regular season finale
JACKSON TWP — NexTier Stadium has recently been very good to the Seneca Valley football team.
Or, more accurately, the Raiders have been very good within its confines.
SV has won its last 11 games on its home turf, beginning with a 28-21 victory over Shaler Oct. 14, 2011.
The Raiders will attempt to continue their winning ways at home when they close the regular season Friday against Fox Chapel.
“Between the band, dance team, cheerleaders and support from the community, we love the atmosphere at NexTier,” said Raiders’ coach Don Holl. “I know the kids love playing there.”
Seneca will be facing a Fox Chapel team that, while coming off a 49-17 win over Butler last week, is 2-6 overall and dealing with several key injuries.
But for Holl, his team has a lot of motivation to not only win, but play well in the process.
“We want to be the highest seed possible entering the playoffs,” said Holl. “On top of that, as a football player, you only get so many games to play in your career and this will be just our third home game this season. Shame on anybody who thinks we don’t have to prepare and take this team seriously.”
The Foxes (2-4 in the Northern Eight Conference) nearly knocked off playoff-bound North Hills Oct. 4. The Indians scored two late touchdowns to escape with a 21-17 win. In the two games since then, Fox Chapel has scored 97 points, including a 63-48 loss at Baldwin Oct. 11.
The Foxes are led on offense by junior quarterback Billy Urso, who has completed 112 passes for 217 passes for 1,472 yards, 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions.
Nigel Garnett rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns against Butler last week and receiver Brandon Mitchell has caught 31 passes for 500 yards this season. Standing 6-foot-6, Mitchell could be a matchup problem for the Raiders.
“We had an idea that those three guys could put up some numbers for us this season,” said third-year Fox Chapel coach Eric Ravotti. “We’ve had a lot of injuries, losing six starters for the season. But those three have weathered the storm.”
“They’ve scored a lot of points the last couple of weeks,” said Holl of the Foxes. “They have talented and experienced skill players.”
For Seneca Valley (7-1, 5-1), slot back Dom DiTommaso and receiver Brad Hensler have been dealing with undisclosed injuries. While Hensler is expected to play against the Foxes, DiTommaso’s return is uncertain.
One player who was available in last week’s 39-3 win at Bethel Park was sophomore Corbin Kessler, who filled in for his injured teammates by catching four passes for 104 yards and added a 21-yard touchdown run.
Kessler also started at safety on defense.
“He’s very intuitive,” said Holl. “He can make things happen, no matter what position you put him in.”
Junior quarterback T.J. Holl passed for 300 yards against the Black Hawks, coming just six yards shy of breaking SV’s single-game record of 305 yards, set by C.J. Brown in 2008.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
