Raiders demolish Bethel Park
BETHEL PARK — Seneca Valley hit Bethel Park with a flurry of uppercuts in the first half of Friday’s non-conference football game.
Senior linebacker Tucker Van Dyke landed the knockout blow.
Trailing the Raiders 19-0 in the waning moments of the second quarter, Bethel Park faced a fourth-and-goal from SV’s 7-yard line with just six seconds left before halftime.
Black Hawks quarterback Levi Metheny rolled to his left and his pass was tipped and intercepted by Van Dyke, who raced 97 yards for a touchdown, giving the Raiders a 26-0 lead at intermission.
They went on to dismantle Bethel 39-3.
“That was a huge play,” said Seneca Valley coach Don Holl of Van Dyke’s interception. “If Bethel scores there, it’s a whole different ballgame. As it was, we took all the momentum into halftime.”
“I think the pass was a little high,” said Bethel Park coach Jeff Metheny. “Levi had just one interception this season coming into tonight. Tonight he had two. He didn’t take care of the ball, but I credit Seneca Valley. They played very well tonight.”
Thanks to a big-play offense, the Raiders (7-1) had the Black Hawks (5-3) on the ropes from the outset of the game.
Seneca Valley took the opening kickoff and drove 62 yards in nine plays. Mason Dehart scored on a 1-yard run for a 6-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
It was the first of two touchdowns for Dehart in the first half.
After a Bethel Park punt, the Raiders went right through the host’s defense again.
T.J. Holl completed four passes, three of them to Eric Mrkonja, and an offsides penalty against Bethel on fourth down gave the Raiders a first down at the Black Hawks’ 32.
Two plays later, Corbin Kessler scored on a 21-yard run. Chad Izenas’ extra point made it 13-0.
Holl began the game completing his first 14 passes for 178 yards.
“He was really spinning the ball in pregame,” said Coach Holl of his son and quarterback. “I remembered thinking if he throws that way in the game he’s going to have himself a night.”
Holl finished the game completing 19-of-25 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns.
Both scoring passes came in the second half, 12 yards to Brandan Clough and a 75-yarder to Mrkonja.
Bethel Park avoided the shutout when Matt Monte booted a 29-yard field goal late in the third quarter, making it 33-3.
Along with Kessler’s touchdown run, the sophomore added four catches for 104 yards and was also part of SV’s dominating defense, which allowed just 87 yards in the first half.
“We have great coaches and it seems we have a great plan in place every week,” said Kessler. “We executed well on both sides of the ball tonight.”
Seneca Valley closes the regular season at home against Fox Chapel on Friday.
