BC3 golfers claim conference crown
Jordan Johnson fired an 81 Sunday to lead the Butler County Community College men’s golf team to a Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference title at The Links at Spring Church.
The Pioneers finished the two-day, 36-hole event with 680 total strokes, holding off Westmoreland County Community College, which had 683 strokes.
Johnson carded a 93 on Saturday for a two-day total of 174.
CCAC-South, CCAC-Boyce and CCAC-North also competed in the tournament, which scored the top four golfers both days for each team.
Jayce Corklin paced BC3 with a total score of 165 (82-83). Also contributing to the win were Karns City graduate Tucker Preston (84-83-167), Freeport product Nick Brosius (88-88-176) and Butler’s Tyler Friel (92-87-179).
Bill Smith also competed and carded a 93-96-189.
The Pioneers will compete in the Pennsylvania State Invitational, beginning next Sunday at Penn National Golf Club in Chambersburg.
Women’s SoccerMars High graduate Crysta Ganter scored once and handed out a pair of assists to help No. 11 Slippery Rock University to a 6-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday.Andrea Felix paced The Rock’s offense with three goals and one assist while Ali Brosky and Dara Demich both scored once.Dana O’Neill made one save in net for SRU (6-2-1, 5-2-1).
FootballButler High School graduate Zach Rader threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Khalil Ervin as Grove City College defeated visiting Westminster, 24-21.Rader, a sophomore wingback, also caught three passes for 24 yards for the Wolverines (3-2, 1-2).Quarterback Brian Pell and running back Steve Maskrey both scored on short touchdown runs and Ryan Stewart booted a 27-yard field goal to help GCC build a 24-7 lead early in the second half.
Women’s Field HockeyLindsay Brown scored twice in The Rock’s 3-2 win over visiting Lindenwood on Sunday.Kelsey Gustafson added a goal on a penalty shot and goalie Carlee DuMars stopped five of the seven shots she faced for Slippery Rock (4-7).The win came just a day after SRU was shut out by Millersville, 2-0.Women’s VolleyballDespite 17 kills and 21 digs from Caroline Houston and eight kills courtesy of Seneca Valley product Sarah Beals, SRU fell 3-1 to PSAC-West rival Gannon.The Rock (8-11, 3-3) lost by scores of 19-25, 25-23, 23-25 and 19-25.
Women’s TennisNikolina Grbac and Samantha Bruggeman won at No. 1 and 6 singles, respectively, but The Rock dropped a 5-4 decision to host Chestnut Hill.
