North Allegheny plows through Butler, 58-3

Butler quarterback Tom Jendesky tries to escape a tackle from North Allegheny's Layne Skundrich on Friday during the Golden Tornado's 58-3 defeat to the Tigers.
Tigers post 37 points in second quarter

BUTLER TWP — North Allegheny football coach Art Walker Jr. referred to the Tigers' venture to Butler Friday night as “a business trip.”

His team deserves a raise.

The Tigers scored on every possession in the first half, tallied 37 points in the second quarter and dismantled the Golden Tornado, 58-3, in a Northern Eight clash at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“Our last road game (at Seneca Valley), we had six turnovers,” Walker said. “I emphasized to the kids we had to treat this game like a business trip.

“I'm happy with the way they came out focused. We executed well.”

NA (4-1, 3-1) rolled up 405 yards of offense despite starting running backs Sean Idowu and Jason Bergman missing the game with foot injuries.

Butler (1-4, 1-4) has been outscored 107-3 in the past two weeks and faces a road trip to Upper St. Clair next week.

“Our effort's there and I love the kids we're working with,” Tornado coach Clyde Conti said. “But this isn't easy right now.

“I feel like I'm shortening my life.”

The first time the Tigers got their hands on the football Friday night, Clay Byerly returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown. Butler answered that score with an 11-play, 55-yard drive that resulted in a 41-yard Devin Fitz field goal.

The Tornado trailed only 7-3 after the first quarter.

Then disaster struck.

North Allegheny ran 11 plays in the second period — and scored 37 points.

Isaac Weaver ran 32 yards for a touchdown. He had eight carries for 111 yards and two TDs on the night. Jeff Clemens threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Byerly and Weaver tacked on a 39-yard scoring run with 2:59 left in the half.

Jon Sumpter blocked a Stephen VanLaningham punt and recovered it in the end zone with 1:44 to play in the half. Finally, Clemens found Elijah Ziese wide open deep for an 82-yard bomb with 41 seconds on the clock.

“We just can't stop anybody,” Conti said.

“I had a nice talk with Clyde after the game,” Walker said. “It was the first half and you have to keep the pedal down. That last long pass enabled us to play our reserves the entire second half.”

With the mercy rule in effect, Andre Sumpter had 13 carries for 92 yards and a TD in the second half.

“He's a second-year senior and it was good to get him some reps,” Walker said.

Tom Jendesky carried 22 times for 133 yards for the Tornado. Butler had 10 carries for -9 yards otherwise.

“Tommy was our bright spot,” Conti said. “He really played well. He's doing some nice things.”

Jendesky left the game in the third quarter with an apparent hand injury.

“He's OK,” Conti said.

North Allegheny punted twice all night. On the first, Butler was penalized and handed the Tigers a first down. The Tornado fumbled the second punt, NA's Peter Mathews recovering to set up his team's final touchdown.

“There's no magic elixir to fix this,” Conti said. “We just have to keep working, keep plugging away. And we'll do that.”
