Battle for the top spot

JACKSON TWP — When it comes to September football, this is as big as it gets.

Seneca Valley and Central Catholic, the two remaining undefeated teams (4-0, 3-0) in the Northern Eight Conference, will butt heads Friday at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The winner will have the inside track on a conference championship.

“We're quite familiar with each other,” said Raiders' coach Don Holl. “They are a talented, well-coached and physical team.”

The Vikings' path to 4-0 has been a dominating one as the team has outscored its opponents 194-13. Their closest game to date was a 24-0 win over North Hills Sept. 6.

In last Friday's 49-10 dismantling of Fox Chapel, senior running back Luigi Lista-Brinza rushed for 202 yards and now has 738 yards and nine touchdowns on the season.

Lista-Brinza (5-foot-10, 187 pounds) missed last year's regular-season matchup at Seneca Valley with an injury and the Raiders won 34-7.

“Central has multiple components on offense, but so much of what they do goes through him,” said Holl.

“He has been outstanding so far,” veteran Central Catholic coach Terry Totten said of Lista-Brinza. “He's running downhill and is doing a good job of catching the ball out of the backfield. He's going to make one college coach very happy.”

Vikings' senior quarterback J.J. Cosentino, a two-year starter, has less than 200 yards passing through four games.

“I believe they have all the right components to have a good passing game,” said Holl, “but they have had a lot of big leads in the second half and, with a (mercy) clock, they've kept things on the ground.”

The Vikings' offense will meet its stiffest test yet in a Seneca Valley defense that has allowed just one touchdown in the last 10 quarters.

Central displayed its ability on special teams last week as well as John Petrishen scored on punt returns of 35 and 67 yards.

“Steve Campos is our special teams coordinator and he has done a great job this season,” said Holl. “Michael Denny has punted well for us and I think our coverage has been solid.”

SV junior quarterback T.J. Holl is Seneca's leading rusher with 278 yards on 65 carries and has added four touchdowns. He gained 86 yards and scored twice in last week's 36-0 road victory over Connellsville.

“Seneca does a lot of creative things on offense, but (T.J.) Holl makes the whole thing work,” Totten said. “He extends plays and is tough to bring down.”

“A lot of it comes down to the design of the defense we are facing,” Coach Holl said. “There are going to be games when T.J. runs a lot and there will be times when he doesn't run much at all. We obviously want to have the ball in T.J.'s hands, but we also want to utilize the running backs we have.”

Two of those, senior Dom DiTommaso and junior Mason Dehart, have combined for 273 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

“Last year, the offense was ahead of the game at the start of the season,” said Coach Holl. “This year was more typical, with the defense ahead of the offense. But our offensive guys have become more comfortable with their roles.”
