Service set for Tuesday for shooting victim

ZELIENOPLE — A memorial service for Zelienople native Frank Kohler, who was a victim in the Navy Yard shooting in Washington, D.C., on Monday, will be Tuesday in his hometown.

The service will be at 6 p.m. at the English Lutheran Church, 200 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. Interment will be private.

Kohler’s obituary is on the web page of the Brinsfield Funeral Home in Leonardtown, Md.

A celebration of Kohler’s life will be Saturday afternoon at his home in Tall Timbers, Md.

Kohler was killed by Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old information technology employee with a defense contractor. He used a valid pass to get into the highly secure Naval installation Monday morning and started firing inside a building.

Alexis killed 12 people before he was killed in a gunbattle with police.

The motive for the mass shooting is a mystery.

The obituary said Kohler, 50, “worked as a subject matter expert for the Navy Marine Corps Intranet Project, and ensured that the enterprise had the necessary computing resources.” It said Kohler was a government support specialist for more than 27 years.

In addition to his wife, Michelle, survivors include his daughters, Meghan Kohler and Alexandra Kohler of Lynchburg, Va., and Se Weon Chun of Seattle; his parents, Ray Kohler and Patricia “Jean” Eyles Kohler of Zelienople; and siblings Harvey (Peg) Kohler of Zelienople; Patricia (Dave) Grubbs of Evans City; Carolyn (Mike) Huttinger of Zelienople, and Rhoda Kohler of Greencastle, Pa.

Also listed is a memorial fund to support the college educations of his daughters. Donations can be made to Michelle Kohler, P.O. Box 246, Tall Timbers, Md., 20690.

Memorial contributions also can be made to the Lexington Park Rotary Club, P.O. Box 202, Lexington Park, Md., 20653.
