KC girls soccer scores 20-0 win

KARNS CITY — The scoreboard at Diehl Stadium is brand new, but that didn’t stop the Karns City girls soccer team from trying to wear it out.

The Gremlins scored eight goals before nine minutes ticked off the clock, paving the way to a 20-0 win over Keystone on Saturday at Diehl Stadium.

The offensive outburst is believed to be a school record for goals in a game.

“For as long as I’ve been here, for the past 10 years — eight years as the head coach — this is the most I’ve seen in a game,” said Karns City coach Lisa Castiglione. “We saw some of our girls finish well. We try to work with each game in a different aspect and it was nice to work on those areas.”

Emily LoPresti led the way with five goals and an assist, while Breann Wood tallied four goals and three assists.

Caterina LoPresti started the scoring at the 36:54 mark, before two goals apiece from Emily LoPresti and Megan McCartney stretched the lead to 5-0 with 33:41 to go in the first.

Wood found the back of the net three times in a span of one minute, 33 seconds to make it 8-0 just 8:39 into the match.

Emily LoPresti added two more before the end of the half and Abby Wolfe scored twice, before Hanna Freiters and Emily Schumacher lit up the scoreboard to give the Gremlins an astounding 14-0 cushion at halftime.

“It was good to see some ball movement out there on our part,” said Castiglione. “We definitely worked on some areas of our game that need some fine tuning.”

Karns City (6-0) dominated possession from start to finish and didn’t allow Keystone to fire a single shot. The Gremlins finished with a 50-0 advantage in shots, putting 32 on net in all.

Kayley Buzard had nine second-half saves for Keystone. Olivia Hamm tallied three in the first half.

“Karns City has a good program here,” said Keystone coach Erik Dowlan, who said his team was missing six girls. “They have a junior high program and they play a lot more than we do. They have a lot of experience.”

Wood and Emily LoPresti tacked on a couple of more goals early in the second half, before Wolfe notched her third score for a hat trick.

At times, the Gremlins gave up good looks in front of the net in an attempt to get other teammates involved.

“We wanted to work on our passing today,” said Castiglione. “There were some things the girls were asked to work on, but we still have to play soccer, too. It was good to see some players step up in different scenarios.”

Ashley Coon scored the first goal of her varsity career on a well-placed header to the corner of the net off a corner kick from Wood. Madison Wetzel also netted her first varsity goal, before Freiters capped the scoring.

“It is what it is. … I have a lot of younger girls,” said Castiglione. “The score goes that way because you have some players excited to be in a varsity game and shoot. That’s partly why the score got to where it got.”
