Freeport rallies for first win
WEST DEER — Freeport quarterback Andrew Romanchak scored on a 74-yard run on the second of two quick touchdowns as the Yellowjackets rallied to defeat Deer Lakes 14-10 Friday night.
Romanchak faked a handoff and took off down the sidelines, scoring early in the fourth quarter.
“The fake worked well and everybody bit on it,” Romanchak said. “It ended up being a great play for us.”
Before the go-ahead score, Freeport got its first touchdown when Steven Lassinger scored on a 17-yard run late in the third quarter.
“Lassinger is unbelievable,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “He’s a tough, hard-nosed kid.”
Lassinger finished with a team-leading 126 yards on the night.
The game-winning score was redemption for Romanchak, who fumbled at the goal line in the final minute of the first half.
“The kids showed some resiliency, coming back tonight from some adversity,” Gaillot said. “They never quit.”
Although Romanchak did not complete a pass on the night, he was able to do damage on the ground, going for 112 yards.
Things were going according to plan for the Lancers as they were able to take a 7-0 lead into halftime after Josh Plocki scored on a 67-yard run in the second quarter.
“The effort (Plocki) put forth was awesome tonight,” Deer Lakes coach TJ Wiley said. “It’s a shame we couldn’t pull it out for him.”
Deer Lakes added a Morgan McCausland 22-yard field goal in the third period.
But after the two quick scores, the Lancers found themselves needing a play to get the momentum back. They seemed to get that when quarterback Plocki hit Sal Stoneburner with a pass over the middle, but Stoneburner fumbled the ball and Freeport linebacker Logan Thimons recovered.
Freeport (1-2, 1-2) was not able to get a first down and had to punt the ball back to Deer Lakes (0-3, 0-3), giving the hosts one last shot to win the game.
The Lancers were able to penetrate Freeport territory when Plocki caught a snap over his head and ran for 17 yards on a fourth-down play.
From there, the Freeport defense was able to hold as it received a sack by Micheal Troup and Dylan Hochbein on a third down, setting up a fourth-and-17. Deer Lakes was unable to convert.
On the ensuing possession, when Freeport needed a first down late in the game, Troup broke a couple of tackles and gained 9 yards on third-and-8 to secure the win.
“(Troup) is really starting to come on,” Gaillot said. “It’s the experience he’s getting that’s helping him.”
