Edinboro has plans to lay off 40 professors

EDINBORO — The president of Edinboro University, one of the state-owned universities, today released a plan that includes the elimination of 40 faculty positions.

The administration released the plan before meeting with the campus chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), which represents the faculty members and coaches at Edinboro.

Edinboro is the second of the 14 state-owned university to announce sweeping faculty layoffs.

Clarion University in August announced plans to lay off 54 full time positions in 2014-15.

Jean Jones, president of APSCUF’s Edinboro chapter, said in a news release, “The administration has deliberately chosen to publicly release a plan that fires faculty and staff instead of meeting with us to discuss the proposal.”

APSCUF represents the 300 permanent and 127 temporary faculty at Edinboro. The association has been meeting with administrators to discuss ways to help the university meet its financial obligations while maintaining educational quality.

According to the university’s plan, declining student enrollment has contributed to Edinboro’s financial situation.

Slippery Rock University is another of the schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
