SR boys soccer keeps busy over weekend
The Slippery Rock boys soccer team played three games over the weekend and came away with a 2-1 record.
The Rockets edged Steel Valley 1-0 at the Hempfield Tournament on Saturday after a second-half goal by Josh Stutz assisted by Luc LaChance, while goalie Jason Bluedorn recorded the shutout. Bluedorn tallied 13 saves in Slippery Rock’s next game against Central Catholic, but the Rockets fell by an 8-0 margin.
Slippery Rock bounced back Sunday with a 2-1 win over Waynesburg Central. Nick Stutz scored off an assist from Josh Stutz and LaChance deposited the game-winner. Bluedorn had two saves.
The Rockets return to action today at Freeport.
Knoch 2, Penn Trafford 1 (3-2 PK) — Brandon Vargo scored the lone goal of regulation before the match headed for overtime and the Knights prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks. Lucas Kunkle, Vargo and Ben Andrews found the back of the net to decide the contest.
Brett Miner made three saves during the shootout and was named Shaler Tournament MVP.
Norwin 3, Seneca Valley 2 (PK) — The Raiders lost in penalty kicks during the consolation game of the Seneca Valley Intersection Kickoff Tournament. Chartiers Valley won the tournament in penalty kicks after going scoreless with Baldwin through regulation and overtime.
Girls Soccer
Freeport opened the season with a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Fox Chapel.
Girls Volleyball
The Golden Tornado reached the semifinals of the Butler Volleyball Tournament on Saturday after a 1-0 win over Plum in the first round, but Indiana ousted Butler 2-0 before going on to beat Hopewell 2-0 for the championship.
