BC3 volleyball rolls to tourney crown

BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Community College women’s volleyball team did not lose a game in rolling to victory at the BC3 Early Bird Kick-Off Tournament over the weekend.

The Pioneers defeated CCBC 25-9, 25-12, Allegany 25-18, 25-22 and Cecil 25-14, 25-15 before sweeping Jamestown 25-20, 25-23 in a battle of 3-0 teams in the title match.

Sophomore setter Mackenzie Huey was named tournament MVP, compiling 67 assists and 14 aces. Freshman libero Alexis Linamen made the all-tournament team with 43 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Mariah Clark added 27 kills and 36 digs to the cause while freshman outside hitter Heather Straynick had 24 kills.

BC3 returns to action Saturday at the Alfred Community College Tournament.

Cross Country

Slippery Rock University’s men’s cross country team is picked to finish third out of 16 teams in the PSAC preseason coaches poll. The Rock women are picked to finish seventh out of 18 teams.

Defending league champions Edinboro (men) and Shippensburg (women) are picked to repeat their titles.

Butler graduate Chris Grooms is one of four all-region runners returning to SRU’s men’s squad. He was the school’s top finisher in the PSAC and regional meets a year ago.

Slippery Rock High grad Ryan Thompson returns as well as The Rock brings back nine of its top 10 runners.

Kara Styles was granted an additional year of eligibility and was The Rock women’s No. 2 runner last season, earning All-PSAC and all-region honors.
