Berkheimer will file lawsuits for back taxes
Berkheimer Associates, the delinquent tax collector for Butler’s business privilege tax, will be filing lawsuits against taxpayers who have not paid their taxes through 2012.
Taxpayers who have a suit filed against them will be responsible for any legal fees incurred.
City Treasurer Jeff Smith said its another step in the continued efforts to make sure everyone pays their fair share in taxes.
“I understand that no one likes to pay taxes,” he said. “However it is only fair to the vast majority of individuals and businesses that do pay their taxes in full and on time that Berkheimer pursues those who do not.”
Smith said there is a particular emphasis on people who have not paid their taxes for a number of years.
He said 68 people have either failed to pay or underpaid their business privilege taxes at some time between 2000 and 2011.
Those wishing to settle their account before their court hearing can do so by contacting Berkheimer at 800-360-7214.
