Rangers add Rios to fill hole in outfield

The Rangers saw outfielder Alex Rios at his worst with the Chicago White Sox and still wanted him.

The Rangers realized their goal on Friday, obtaining Rios and $1 million for a player to be named, expected to be minor league middle infielder Leury Garcia. Rios is guaranteed $17.43 million in salary for this season and next and a $1 million buyout if the club declines his option, at $14 million, for 2015.

Rios had been targeted by the Rangers since July, when the club was uncertain about outfielder Nelson Cruz’s future because of the Biogenesis scandal. Cruz accepted a 50-game suspension on Monday, and the Rangers responded by claiming Rios on waivers. The sides worked out a deal shortly before the negotiating window closed.

“A quality player who can help us on both sides of the ball,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “He’s a good fit for us.”

The Rangers heavily scouted Rios in July, assigning four scouts along with senior special assistant Don Welke to watch him. In July, Rios continued a rough stretch.

Rios hit for average in July at .282, but his OPS dropped to .677. For June-July combined, Rios hit .266 with two homers, 21 RBIs and a .667 OPS. In April-May, he hit .279 with 10 homers, 28 RBIs.
