Eagle County Amateur Sunday

CRANBERRY TWP — The field is set for the 19th annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament at Cranberry Highlands.

This year's event will feature 170 golfers, the most since 184 competed in the 2005 tourney at Oakview.

“We will have good representation from the Cranberry area,” Eagle County Amateur committee member John Carpenter said. “We anticipated that when we moved the event down there.”

No further entries will be accepted as all tee times have been filled.

There are 63 golfers in the championship flight and 125 combined golfers in the top two flights. Both figures are tournament records.

“This will be a high-caliber event,” Carpenter said.

St. Jude Golf Club member Sean Knapp tops the field, having won the tourney four times in the past five years. Other former Eagle County Amateur champions among the field include Rob Voltz (2007), Chuck Young (2001), Dave Hungerman (1998) and Jim Hepler (1996).

This year's field includes 15 women, another tournament record. The past three women's champions — Jane Wymer in 2012, Tanya Wilkinson in 2011 and Sharon Goncz in 2010 — will be playing.

Carpenter has played the Cranberry golf course and said it will be challenging.

“It's a longer course,” he said. “It will pose a problem if you don't hit the ball straight. There's a lot of fescue out there that's thick and hard to hit out of.”

Carpenter said the fescue and wooded areas will be played as lateral hazards. Golfers may choose to hit out of the fescue or drop the ball outside of it and take a one-stroke penalty.

All golfers are requested to be at the course at least 30 minutes prior to their respective tee time. The morning shift tees off at 7:45 a.m., the afternoon shift at 1:15 p.m.

Joining Carpenter as tournament committee members are Voltz, Tom Sheehan, Bill Black, Jay Frederick and Bob Jarecki.
