ZELIENOPLE — Borough officials are considering whether to get a liquor license to sell beer and wine at select events at Community Park.

Mary Hess, councilwoman and park board member, told council members that she is exploring how to get an event alcohol license.

The revenues from those sales would help fund park programs and improvements.

Borough council Monday night gave Hess the go-ahead to get the details on a license and to make sure liability insurance was available through the borough’s insurance company before a decision is made.

The license would allow for the sale of beer and wine at events such as music at the amphitheater and wine tastings.

The cost for the event liquor license would be $1,400 for the first year and $680 a year in subsequent years.

Hess said if the license is obtained, the number of events where that alcohol would be available would be limited to a couple a year.

“It (alcohol) would not be served every week. It would be for several events per year,” she said.

For each event the alcohol would be brought in and then removed when it ended, said Hess.

Earlier this year, the successful Zelienople On Tap and Unplugged beer and music festival was held as a fundraiser for the borough’s parks programming.

Because the borough does not have a liquor license, the event was run by an outside vendor that had a license. Because of that, the promotion of the event had to be limited, Hess said.
