Eckstein: BC3 board suspect
Is the Butler County Community College board diverse enough? County Commissioner Jim Eckstein says the answer is no.
Eckstein is questioning the composition of the board. He said at the commissioners meeting Monday that BC3 board members shouldn’t be the friends of fellow commissioners Bill McCarrier and Dale Pinkerton.
“I’m concerned about diversity here,” Eckstein said.
Among four board reappointments slated to be approved Wednesday are Kim Geyer and Jennifer Linn.
Geyer is McCarrier’s administrative assistant while Linn is a friend of Pinkerton.
“It just looks suspect,” Eckstein said.
He said there’s no problem with Geyer or any other member — it’s a matter of having a better representation of people.
McCarrier defended the board membership, saying each person brings valuable experience to BC3.
“I think we have an excellent board,” he said.
McCarrier cited Geyer’s background dealing with education at the local and state level, Linn’s legal background and others’ business acumen.
“They’re all excellent people,” he said.
Pinkerton said it would be difficult for the county to find people who did not know McCarrier or him.
“We know just about everybody in this county,” Pinkerton said.
McCarrier pointed out the college board works on naming potential appointments for the commissioners’ consideration.
Along with Geyer and Linn, Jim Ferguson, director of training for Penn United Technologies, and Glenn Miller, funeral director for Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, are up for re-appointment.
The term for all four seats is six years.
