'Suds' awash in toe-tapping tunes
The cast of “Suds: The Rocking ’60s Musical Soap Opera” opened to a packed house Friday night at the William A. Lehnerd Production Center in Memorial Park. The audience consisted of people ages 8 to 80 and all seemed taken with the light hearted musical.
Cindy (Tammy Erkman) feels all washed up after her cat dies, her pen pal writes her off and the IRS writes her up. All of this and it’s her birthday too.
This Laundromat lady, laden with more than she thinks she can bear, wants to take her final spin at life when she is interrupted by two mysterious gals who become her pals for the day. They are Dee Dee, an angel in training (Davlin Smith), and Marge (Paula Baptiste). The dynamic duo is quite different in their approach to helping the desperate laundress.
About 50 of the greatest hits from the 1960s are the soundtrack for this light storyline. Songs like “Mr. Postman,” “Chapel of Love” and “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” tell the tale from the first letter to the last “Shout.”
The show was well cast, with well balanced voices and actors full of chemistry and verve.
David Halin who played every male role, from the postman to the nerd of all nerds, stole the show with his zany antics and of course his well toned vocals. He reigned supreme on “Wonderful, Wonderful,” a delightful ballad which he delivered effortlessly.
Erkman was enjoyable from pout to “Shout.” Her vocals were clear and soft when called for but it was apparent she could belt it out when needed.
Smith’s devilish side showed through on one of her few sassy songs, “Big Man.” Typically strong vocally, the role itself seemed to call for a tamer persona so as not to compete with her brassy cohort, Baptiste, who exuded sass.
Baptiste’s vocal demands were great, and she delivered. The “Respect” medley showed her soul while the “Look of Love/You Don’t Have to Say You Loved Me” lament showed her power. Big voice emotional delivery, spot on.
The fun finale brought the audience into the action as they sealed the deal on “SUDS.”
If you are looking for profound truths or sage wisdom, you won’t find it in this show. But you will find a flashback to a simpler time and enjoy some toe-tapping good tunes perfect for a summer evening’s entertainment.
