Chillicothe powers past BlueSox
It was just one of those nights.
Butler used six pitchers, including position player Josh Forbes, walked 10 batters and gave up 17 hits in a 17-2 loss to Chillicothe at Pullman Park Friday night.
“We haven't had a game get away from us like that this season,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. “Maybe we got it out of our system.”
GJ Senchak got the start and lasted just 1 1-3 innings before being chased. The left-hander was charged with six runs, four earned, in the second inning as the Paints began the rout.
Tyler Swarmer relieved Senchak and pitched well for 2 2-3 innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
The left-hander walked the leadoff batter and the surrendered a single and a double before being lifted for Jordan Schwartz, who also struggled.
Giancarlo Brugnoni hit a towering home run off Schwartz with the bases loaded to open up a 13-1 lead for Chillicothe.
“Like I told them in the huddle, they are a very aggressive swinging team,” Rebyanski said. “We have to do a better job in preparation before the game.”
Butler managed to score single runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, both on RBI from Russell Clark, but Chillicothe added three runs in the top of the seventh and another in the top of the eight to cap the rout.
There were few highlights for the BlueSox.
Pat McCarthy and Adam Jurich each had a pair of hits, one of Jurich's knocks a double down the right field line. Forbes also pitched well, giving up just one run in his two innings of work.
“Forbes did a nice job. He pitched about an inning in his college season,” Rebyanski said of Forbes, a sophomore catcher at Seton Hill University. “I just didn't want to burn an arm there. We were short on guys and we have a long stretch here before the All-Star Break. We have a few guys now who aren't going to be able to go for a couple of days.”
Rebyanski was able to get Chris Ward some work on the hill.
Ward, a left-hander from Grand Valley State University, had not pitched this season while battling tendinitis in his shoulder.
Ward struck out two in a clean sixth inning, but labored a pit in the seventh, walking two around an error before he was removed for Grove City High graduate Jason Revesz.
“He hasn't pitched in about two months,” Rebyanski said of Ward. “He's going to come around and he's going to be another lefty out of the pen.”
Butler fell back to the .500 mark after a rousing 2-1 win in 13 innings against the Paints Thursday afternoon.
Rebyanski said his team will quickly forget about this one.
The BlueSox host Lorain County in a pair of games this weekend.
“I'm just considering this a 1-0 loss and we'll go back at it tomorrow,” he said.
